Star Trek Fate: Life Spans

Leave a comment

Star Trek has a wide variety of species with a wide variety of life spans. In keeping with the simplicity of FATE, I decided to have a mechanic that only deals with 2 different life spans (3 technically if you want to include immortal beings). The first is the normal life span of just over 100 years.  The 2nd, is a life span of around just over 200 years. A species would naturally fall under the first life span unless otherwise noted in the Species Trait.

I also decided to tie Skill rewards and Refresh awards to age. Though, there will always be special instances where a player can earn additional Refresh for their Character. Characters that live the usual 100 years start out at age 18 with 3 Refresh. For characters that live 200 years they will start out at age 22 with 5 Refresh. For most of a characters life every year will get them a new skill point. So, if you want to quickly create a Captain that is 50 years old you can already know that he is going to have 50 skill points and work from there.  As a character gets older the rate at which they earn Skill will slowly decrease.

Lifespan Fate/skills per year

1 skill point per year of life (average for human is 100 years old)

Every 4th year should get another Fate Point (Plus the normal skill point)

Age 75 = 71 skill points

Age 80 = 72 skill points. Physical actions take 1 time incriminate longer to complete than usual.  This means if it would usually take you an instant to run to the other side of the bridge it now takes you a few moments, or if it would usually take you half a minute to change out the osculation overthruster, it now takes you a full minute.

Age 85 = 73 skill points.

Age 90 = 74 skill points

age 95 = 75 skill points. Physical actions now take 2 time increments longer to complete.

Age 100 = 76 skill points.  Also, all physical skills take a -1 every 5 years. Beginning at age 100, at the end of each year make a Physique roll. If the result is ever -3 your character dies. Fate points may be used as normal for this roll.

100 = -1
105 = -2
110 = -3
115 = -4
120 = -5
125 = -6
130 = -7
135 = -8
140 = -9

Advanced lifespan (200 years)

Every 7th year should get another Fate Point (Plus the normal skill point)

5 Refresh = 23 skill points (max +4)
6 Refresh = 30 skill points
7 Refresh = 37 skill points (max +5)
8 Refresh = 44 skill points
9 Refresh = 51 skill points

12 Refresh = 72 skill points
13 Refresh = 79 skill points (max +6)

No more Refresh or skill points are awarded past this point.

Beginning at age 200 all physical and mental skills take a -1 every 5 years.

Beginning at age 200, at the end of each year make a Physique and a Willpower roll. If the result is ever -3 your character dies. Fate points may be used as normal for this roll.

Whenever your characters Physique or Willpower becomes -3 your character dies.

200 = -1
205 = -2
210 = -3
215 = -4
220 = -5
225 = -6
230 = -7
235 = -8
